Currently On: Alien (1979)

Subsequent to what I was writing last night about Dark Star there are some Dan O'Bannon correlations in this film, which largely wrote as a remake of that film (which he wrote John Carpenter and stared in)--they are rough but they are there.  The computer on The Dark Star speaks in a female voice, the computer on board (via the evil corporation they work for) his called "Mother"--this is just one example of retooling.  Another is eventually both ships blow apart.  In the case of the creature, the alien in Dark Star, first serves as a sort of pet, and of course, on the Nostromo they have Jones the cat, which I suppose is a mouser.

Not exactly and escape pod...but a hell of a way to die escaping from a blown up ship.
