Cinematogragher: Roger Deakins |
What's so scary about this?? Well, of course, there's that prologue with the (possible) dybbuk (it's like a demon zombie like creature from the dead); but the film was bandied about for years as the project the Coens were working on that was a parable of the Book of Job. Now, if you are Jewish (religious or not) or Christian, especially Protestant--you are quite familiar that the book of Job is not just about God "trying" a man to the point that well, it's torture, sorry it just is to force him to prove his love to God! It's isn't just depressing, because at some point the tribulations that Job endures start to get so extreme as to become "oppressive," as in the religious sense. It is certainly the one book in the Holy Books that is not only sad and depressing, it's terrifying in many almost banal aspects. Roger Deakins, as a Cinematographer, is such a talented director of photography in large out door settings--his dealing with the couple of very claustrophobic films that the Coen Brothers have had him photograph (Barton Fink is another example) makes him a genius in my book. Somewhere, floating out there in cyberspace is an article about how he had to light the actual synagogue where the funeral and Bar Mitzvah were held....not easy apparently. Maybe it's on the extras from the Blu Ray
