Alien Monster(s): some sort of "kaiju" from space (yes, I know kaiju just means "monster" in Japanese....). There has been some speculation on this critter(s) over the years...some theories have it escaping from the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (remember this one from Silence Of The Lambs?), but it is pretty clearly from space--as seen as the end of the film in the shot from Coney Is. Subsequent films bear this out. Nice theory while it lasted though!! [Note: the "s" in parenthesis because a bunch of little monsters fall off this thing and ravage the underground portions of Manhattan Island].
