After The Thin Man (1936)

From here on in the Thin Man movies are simply based on Hammett's characters, they are nonetheless well scripted (at least the ones from the 30's are), have great murder mysteries, loads of comedy and noir mixed in with, well, more cocktails!  This film is almost as famous as the first one, owed to the fact that it stars James Stewart.  The murder mystery at the core is extremely dark and disturbing, which seems to match oddly well with all the slapstick--dog included.  I guess it's sort of like Sweet & Sour...  I is also a good a New Year's flick as the first one is Christmas.
