P. D. James' character Adam Dalgliesh is one of Britain's greatest detective inventions, and that is saying something....there is some seriously stiff competition out there. What makes Dalgliesh, and James' writing for that matter stand out, it that they are both able to draw you in to an incredibly complicated story and keep you there for HOURS without it being a forced affair. One never feels the tug of "oh just get on with it!!" While this is decidedly shorter than say, The Black Tower, it is still 3 hours long. Martin Shaw is the second actor to take on the role of Dalgliesh and I think he does a great job, but, then again, I'm not one of those people who gets upset when different actors take on the same character. This one certainly qualifies as a proper Halloween scare...I mean people are being burned alive!!
