This is the series that blends the real exploits of both Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his teacher Dr. Joseph Bell, reputedly who Doyle's character Holmes is based, hence the series sub-title "The Dark Beginnings Of Sherlock Holmes." Dark indeed, when one considers that Bell was Queen Victoria's physician while in Scotland, during which the Jack The Ripper murders were committed. Bell actually wrote at least one book that was influential in the field of forensic observation in cases of non-obvious murder...but good luck trying to find a copy these days!!! I will say that I am a huge fan of the late Ian Richardson!! He passed away in his sleep right before he was set to appear on long running British mystery series Midsomer Murders.
