PUMPKIN SPICE
I was in the grocery store with The Peanut the other day checking out Halloween stuff, next to all the stuff that a little kids covet, and their parents can't afford, was a display of "Pumpkin Spice"--I guess for us adults. Jeez it was $4.19 for 1 1/2 oz!! Now I know that food prices have gone up (I spend time as stock and commodities trader in my real life), but CRAP! that's ridiculous! The stuff is easy to put together from bulk spices that can be obtained from local markets to online sources like Penzey's. Basic ingredients include:
Cinnamon powder
Nutmeg powder
Mace powder
Allspice powder
Some version include sugar--if you want to include that in the mixture for convenience, fine, but just be aware that a lot of recipes that call for Pumpkin Pie Spice have sugar as an additional ingredient. On the other hand, I love having this on hand with brown sugar mixed in already to brew with coffee in the mornings. Anyway...Happy Halloween!! Save some money!
