On this Spooktober Friday the 13th I am here to throw some love to the one Friday the 13th franchise sequel that has been called the worst. Over the years us fans of the franchise have all started to come clean about our favorites & least favorites (for a number of years there, it wasn't cool to admit you liked anything past part IV!). I respect everyone's love on the subject, but for the life of me, I simply cannot understand why so many people love part VII. It was really supposed to be Jason vs Carrie and it came off as "crazy girl vs everyone"--Jason just seems to lurk more than anything else (yes, I know there is that scene with the metal bladed weed whacker). So, when part VIII came out, it was a relief that Jason was back, front and center. Yes the budget ultimately kept it from having a large number of NYC shots, and forced the script rewrite to focus more on the boat travel; but still when Jason gets down to business, there are some of is best kills since the early part of franchise. Kane Hodder is in the Jason makeup for both films, but it's really only in Part VIII where he gets to make the most of his menacing stocky body language, with a serious amount of humor thrown in. One thing that I seriously don't like about the film--and it could have easily been dispensed with--is the flooded sewer system ending. I think it weakens supernatural slashers to try to explain things--and, of course, it's going to take up budget funds that could go into the main focus of the film...killing creeps on the streets of Manhattan! So, this is my confession...I really love this film. Has some cool, very schlocky late 80's hair metal music to boot.
