Ok, yes this is a Japanese monster movie, and no, it's not one of the classic "oldies." In fact it was made in 1996. That, however, lends to a pretty good looking Blu-Ray. The special effects are still "Japanese Cheesy," but with updated features. The explosions are better, the power-lines are more realistic and the scale of human to monster is much less unbelievable. What I like about Blu-Ray is how well it transfers the darks. In a movie like The Dark Knight or Blade Runner, the Blu-Ray experience blows your head off in sequences that must be lightened for transfer to DVD. But a new technology must serve the low end as well as the high. Here is an opportunity (and there are surprisingly many) to test out the "low-end."
This Blu-Ray is actually a Gamera double feature. I have , as of this morning, viewed both of them. They both look very good for what they are. The monster fight scenes are a special treat. When I started Friday Frights back in my late teens, my neighbors young sons used to love to come over a watch monster flicks, and old Japanese monster movies were a favorite (all time winner: Mothra); so I know a bad, nee terrible, copy of the genre when I see it. This is literally a million times better than that technology! Of course, this was before these two movies were made, but still we are talking Japanese Monster Movies... I am very much looking forward to Blu-Ray editions of some of the classics! How about a double feature of the original Godjira (1954) & the American release of Godzilla (1956) with Raymond Burr!
Can't really go wrong with this one, it retails for $7.99.
