Another murder mystery that stars Fred Ward, along with Graham Greene (Oneida), Sheila Tousey (Menominee), Chief Ted Thin Elk (Rosebud Lakota [Sioux]) and Val Kilmer (Cherokee). John Trudell is more or less playing himself in the character of James Looks Twice. Sheila Tousey in the role of Maggie Eaglebear is loosely based on Anna Mae Pictou Aquash, who although she was murdered on Pine Ridge, was actually a Mi'kmaq "Indian" from Canada. Sam Shepard does a great turn as seriously crooked FBI agent--he's a little too good at it--it's scary. It was shot on one of the most notorious reservation in the country: Pine Ridge. Pine Ridge is famous for being the site of the infamous Wounded Knee massacre on Dec. 29, 1890. The Wounded Knee memorial site was taken over in 1973 by AIM. The film takes place in the 1970's during the most violent times for the Native American rights fight. In the ARM, which stands for "Aboriginal Rights Movement," stands in for AIM (American Indian Movement) and Fred Ward's character, Jack Milton, is a barely disguised and despised Richard "Dick" Wilson, the very corrupt, murderous Pine Ridge tribal chairman at the time (it's a little hard to see Ward in the part, since Dick Wilson was a fat f**k!).
