Tim Burton's famous adaptation of Steven Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's 1979 musical Victorian horror classic, based on the story that first appeared in a penny dreadful in actual Victorian times, stars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, just as Corpse Bride does, only this time it is live action.  It was nominated for 3 Oscars, and won 1 of them.

Another musical revival this year that has garnered 10 Tony nominations is Gershwin and Heyward's 1935 popular opera triumph Porgy and Bess.  In addition to 7 others, the production is nominated for Best Direction, Best Orchestration and Best Revival Musical.  Tony page here.

One of the musical up for best revival is a reinventing of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1973 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar (lyrics by Tim Rice).  The production is also up for Best Actor in a Leading Role.  Tony's page here.

The Climax (1944)

Yes, it's a Horror Musical starring Boris Karloff himself...with some really, really bad opera.  I would feel remiss, nonetheless, if I didn't include it.  The film is just such a strange curiosity...and then there's the technicolor from 1944 that adds to it's strange gharish charm.

And speaking of old stuff, currently Follies is up for Best Musical Revival, along with 7 others.  The original was a big hit on Broadway, all the way back in 1971--music and lyrics by Steven Sondheim, based on the book by James Goldman.  Tony's page here.

Little Shop Of Horrors (1986)

One of the most successful horror musicals ever, this was even nominated for 2 Oscars.  What's more, it's even been to Broadway (see stage still below).  It's a Frank Oz film that has far more musical numbers than even your average musical, never mind movie musicals.  It famously stars Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene, with Levi Stubbs very memorably providing the voice of Audrey II.  It is sprinkled with strange little performances by the likes of John Candy, Bill Murray, James Belushi, even Christopher Guest, along with veteran musical actor Vincent Gardenia as the flower shop owner Mushnik.  It notably features one really wickedly awesome number by Steve Martin...as the psychotic dentist Orin Scrivello--D.D.S. (see below).

Peanut's Choice: The Corpse Bride (2005)

To kick off our first ever Musical Fright Night, we're going with a choice from the kid.  This is one of his all time favorite movies anyway, never mind that it's Burton's creepy musical for kids and ups alike....well one that it's Christmas related anyway (and yeah,  I know that he didn't direct Nightmare Before Christmas, but despite that Henry Selick, it's still a Burton film...).  The Tony Awards are this Sunday live on CBS @ 8PM EDT, and while the awards also go for play, they are much more known for their musical numbers and awards--hence today's theme.

Twister (1996)

I have not seen this movie is years!!  But it's out on Blu Ray and it shouldn't be missed on June 1.  Hurricanes actually span more tornadoes than extreme thunderstorms...but they are small by comparison to the monsters on the plains.  The thing with hurricane twisters is that they are plural!  Lots of little ones, very close together, can be a mess.  I mean, how weird is it that a storm that already causes high winds also spawns tornadoes...no wonder the word "hurricane" comes from the indigenous "hurracan"--God Of Wind!
