Haunted Houses: Casper (1995)

The above is the (or rather was) the Colonial Mansion on the Colonial Street section of the Universal backlot. Some of Casper was filmed there. The structure was torn down in 2005 and no reports of it or any other part of this section of the backlot have been reported as actually haunted; BUT, other sections have been.

Haunted Houses: The Legend Of Hell House (1973)

All of the interiors of this film were shot on a cleverly designed sound-stage, but the exteriors were shot in two different locations, at two historic houses in England: Blenheim Palace (historic home of the Churchills) and Wykehurst Place.  Can't help but think that at least Blenheim is actually haunted....

Haunted Houses: Ghostbusters (1984--34 Years Old Today!)

The principle building, mentioned in the film as being located on Central Park West, actually is located there at 55, in the historic district of NYC.  Again, like the Dunimuir house in Burnt Offerings, it has been around for a long time (earliest portions of the building apparently date from 1910's). It has also had a long list of famous occupants and still is a building filled with private residences.  To my knowledge, it has not reported any activity of the paranormal--which is actually kind of surprising! 👻. Of course, the whole premise of the story is a spoof of Rosemary's Baby and the building she finds herself trapped in. 

Haunted Houses: Burnt Offerings (& The Dunsmuir House)

One of my favorite haunted house films, this was my introduction to Dan Curtis (hadn't yet caught "Dark Shadows" on PBS re-runs with episodes of "Dr. Who" to follow!).  As a haunted house concept, it still hasn't been really reviled as a story.  The house used in the is the Dunsmuir House, and has come to be well known in films (even a staple of horror films, as it appears in Phantasm just a few years later). Burnt Offerings is the first time that the house was used in a film and is most certainly not located on Long Island...it is, in fact, located so close to San Fransisco that it has suffered some earthquake damages over the years. The house was built in 1899, and despite it's both public and private history, it has never been listed as an actual haunted location for any reason.

Despite the poster clearly showing a cemetery that one would ONLY find in New Orleans here in The South, this film is actually set in Florida.
