House Trivia

The game that House is playing in S7 Ep4, Massage Therapy, was created by the patient from S6 episode Epic Fail.

Princeton Plainboro hospital is based on a real Princeton, N.J. hospital, The Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital

It is well known that House is actually based on Sherlock Holmes, to further drive home that fact, when we see House's drivers license on Ep. 13, Two Stories, his street address is listed as "Baker St.."  In a previous season, his actual address was given as 221B.

The building that is shown in series as Princeton Plainsboro Hospital is actually the student union at Princeton University.

Hugh Laurie's real life father was a doctor.

Chase's GPS in Ep. 22, After Hours, reveals that Princeton Plainsboro Hospital is located on Prospect St.

The concept for the show was inspired directly from The Diagnosis Column in the New York Times Magazine, which spotlights a different unusual medical case every week.

Dr. Chase's is a intensivist, which is a doctor who specializes in Intensive Care.  It is a relatively new medical specialty in the US, but is well established in Australia, the country that Chase is from (and, of course, Jesse Spencer who plays Chase, is as well).

Dr. Wilson has an undergraduate degree from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  He also has a degree from Columbia's School of Oncology.

Another inspiration for the character of House is from Orson Welles' Touch of Evil.  Welles' character from that film is Police Captain Hank Quinlan, a detective with a penchant for solving even the most difficult cases, and, has a gimpy leg.  The poster for the film shows up in Wilson's office.

As far as the Sherlock Holmes comparison goes, it should be pointed out that Holmes himself was based on a real person, Joseph Bell, and he was a doctor.
