Although this version is marketed as the "Director's Cut," popularly known as the "I Slept Too Long" edition, it was actually the original intended ending to the film, not the S-mart ending that most of us came to know and love. In fact, the Raimi's and Bruce Campbell have all stated that they prefer this ending, probably because it was the original that they worked so hard on, and because it was meant to bring in another sequel which, for various reasons good and bad, never materialized. It thought about putting it on this evening because the cave sleep that Ash accidentally puts himself into for so long mirrors some of the Arthurian legends about Merlin and cave sleep (and that did just make an appearance in the Sam Neill mini we just screened). Every thing about this film (and a lot of Evil Dead 2) invokes other stories and movies, so it seemed fitting to play this for a Medieval night given it's Merlin connections. I personally, like so many uber-fans of these movies, prefer the S-Mart ending we all thought was the original in the first place....but there is a time and a place for everything.
