I used to have a relative that actually worked at Danvers where this was shot. The film is so utterly creepy, but feels a bit personal, since the town didn't want it demolished, wanted it kept up as a historic site (it was in very good shape considering it's abandoned state and was a historic location), it was torn down in a particularly disgusting way any way. Locals burned down a couple of attempts at planned settlements, before the developers "succeeded" any way.
