This movie is based on the Dutch myth of Sinterklaas, whose
"arrival" in The Netherlands is supposed to be, well, today, or tonight. It's the whole reason for doing an Evil Santa theme theme this Friday in the first place. This is actually a Dutch film, but most will find it rentable only in the English dub; but for dubbed films, it's really one of the better ones,perhaps because Dutch is Germanic--related to English-- and about as far away from say Japanese or, say, Cantonese as you get. "Beware the moon" (?) No! Beware the Spaniards!!
I think this is currently on Netflix too, titled "St. Nicholas."
ReplyDeleteI rented it from Amazon, so it makes sense Netflix would have it. I should have noted that it's alternative title was "St. Nicholas." On a related note, I read in the news that something like 60 people were arrested in The Netherlands this year over the whole "Black Peter" image when they had a "formal" welcoming of Sinterklass. The whole subject is kind of fascinating. The movie, though, does have it's moments. I managed to track down a Dutch copy on DVD--so look forward to watching it agin this month!
