The Libertine (2004)

Starring acting superstar, Johnny Depp, this film is also based on a play whose author adapted it for the big screen--in this case Stephen Jeffereys.  It based on John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, a poet of the 17th century who was known to have been a kind of love/hate relationship with King Charles II.  Although other films have flirted with the idea of depicting Rochester, they have done so in a largely comedic fashion (see Restoration)--this film is NOT funny.  The film, which takes on it's subject matter head on, is dark, and basically devoid of any kindness--it is stark and pretty much smashes uncomfortable truth in your face.  It really almost flirts with being a horror movie.
