This is one of Allen's Master works. It is also strangely dark. Of course it is comedic; it's a Woody Allen film. The comedy though, isn't mixed with dark or outrageous behavior, like say in Deconstructing Harry; here the comedic moments are starkly separated from the very bleak moments of despair, fear of exposure, and eventually, murder. What makes this movie pretty scary, is that the act of murder ultimately becomes an act of over-arching redemption.
