Weird Shark 4: Heliocoprion

Years ago a very strange fossil was uncovered out west here in the US--it was a strange set of teeth, and owing to their shape, they had to come from some sort of weird prehistoric shark, hence to unknown to science.  Since no one had seen anything like this before all sort of fanciful images began to circulate as to what this beast looked like with such a jaw full of teeth.

The actual teeth

Other Proposed Heliocoprion Images:

Then....another set of teeth where found in an actual fossilized shark skull with the same teeth pattern.  They were just different enough to alert scientists that there were at least two sharks belonging to this prehistoric fish family, probably more with the same design, like Hammerheads.  What the discovery of that skull did though is make it clear how these teeth fit into the sharks jaw....and it turns out that they really looked like this:

The teeth were set up to replace lost teeth on the lower jaw rapidly, much more rapidly than current modern sharks, which meant that this animal was probably a specialized feeder of giant prehistoric shellfish.  Still impressive!!  Read more at Wikipedia

  1. The model of Helicoprion with the tooth whorl inside the throat has been criticized by some other scientists. Some related sharks, like Ornithoprion, have been found to have a similar, though not as extreme tooth whorl and long snout like in the above images, so it appears as though the above image is more correct. Supposedly there is a specimen of a Helicoprion skull from Russia being described, and the skull may have been slightly different from the above picture.
