The Lost Treasure Of the Grand Canyon

I suffer from an over abundance of two things when it comes to horror movies featuring Aztec themes:  Aztec Mummies and Flying Serpents.  Here's a piece of extreme silliness produced by Anchor Bay for the Syfy.  And by silly, I mean really silly.  At least Scream Of The Mummy gets it's Aztec deities straight!  Even if they can't pronounce them worth a damn.  Here one of main characters, who is supposed to be a Native American expert and purports to speak the "Aztec language" bluntly states "Quetzalcoatl was the Aztec god of rain," butchering the name of course! Wrong!  God of life, color of white.  The god of rain is Tlaloc, one of the most ancient deities in all of Mexico--and features heavily in the previous bit of silliness.  So be it!  Bring on the monsters!

Actual Codex Drawing Of Quetzalcoatl

Nice, huh?!

Also, since I can never seem to get a decent screen capture of the rock art shown in the film--really the only thing that is actually cool about the film, here is a codex depiction of the creatures the archeology team sees painted on the rocks in the Grand Canyon, alerts them that they are indeed about to come face to face with Aztec remnants.

Although the film makers went to a great deal of trouble to recreate this exact codex drawing of a Tzitzimime (Tztzimitl is the plural), they then have their resident expert call it Quetzalcoatl.  Wrong!  Again!  These things (and there are actually a lot of them) are star spirits.  Called by the Spanish demons.  And they are all female!  Have multiple mouths. Oh, and they eat people.
