The Prodigal

We have an annual "Killer Bunny Fright Night" every Friday before Easter.  It's goes some small way to blunting the super-sweet commercial aspect of the holiday, and also helps keep the religious wing nuts somewhat at bay.  I do always try to poke a bit of fun at the religious portion of the holiday--I mean the word "Easter" is actually derived from the name of various Goddesses.  So, here we start the day off with a movie that is supposed to be about religion in ancient Damascus, Syria, versus the pre-Christian Hebrew way of like contemporaneous the time of return of the Jews from their Babylonian captivity; but the narrator tells us plainly that the story itself is taken from the Book of Luke--a Greek and NEW TESTAMENT document.  So, clearly the point of the story is meant to be a message to Christians--afterall it was released in 1955....what else did this country have the 50's??   Oh, McCarthyism!

Anyhoo, this has become a solid Camp Cult favorite.  In fact it comes as part of a series that I wholly enjoy:  Warner Bros. Cult Camp Classics.  This is from Vol 4:  (so called) Historical Epics.  I mean how historical can it really be, with the likes of pearly white Lana Turner as a Syrian High Priestess???  It is filmed in the way over the top 2:55:1 aspect ratio in garish CinemaScope (which Warner thinks it's cute to rebrand "Sinemascope."  Oh, and there is a "bunny moment" in a pageant play!

My God I would Love one there for my backyard!
