Theme Recipe: Homemade Dog Biscuit

HOMEMADE DOG BISCUITS

2 cups enriched flour or 1/2 enriched/1/2 whole wheat flour
1 cup wheat germ or rye flour or good cornflour (or a combo)
1 tsp. brown sugar or molasses
1/3 cup broth of choice (low sodium or unsalted)
1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds
1 large whole egg
3 tbsp. canola oil
1/4 tsp. garlic powder (optional)
1/2 cup milk

1.  Mix the dry ingredients, including the garlic powder if using, together in a large mixing bowl.  That  also includes the brown sugar, also if using.

2.  In a separate bowl, mix the wet ingredients together (which includes the molasses if using).

3.  Make a well in the middle of the dry ingredient and pour in the wet, incorporating it with a fork or your hands.  Mix well until the dough is thick and heavy.

4.  Preheat the oven to 325 to 350 depending on your oven size (bigger mean hotter).  Meanwhile on a floured surface roll the dough out to about 1/8 to 1/16 inch thick.  Cut out shapes with a bone shaped cutter or any other shape you like.  (Lots of people love making Halloween dog treats in October).  Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.  Brush with egg wash if you like--not necessary and bake for 20 minutes, check and bake for another 10 if the biscuits are pliable. Store refrigerator.

VARIATIONS:

The variations on these are almost endless.  All dogs have favorite flavors, just like people.  Some like herbs, some like nuts, some like peanut butter, soy sauce, onion powder, mashed beans, etc.  I've never actually had even finicky dogs pass up the ones made with just a touch of garlic powder.

If you use several different stocks as a base, cut them out in the shape of the stock used.  Chickadees for chicken, vegetables for veggie, cow for beef, etc.

As mentioned above, seasonable decorations can be made with various cutter depending on the time of year.
