Finishing Up The Friday

Moved on from Black Hawk Down to Robin Hood which I had never seen before.  I will need a second look, but my first impression is that I was bored--I could have been me...or not.

One of my favorites, though is my current viewing choice:

I know a lot of people have a problem with Scott not really getting the novel correct in the film, but for the most part I personally like it.  What I do not like so much is Julianne Moore's insistence that Clarice not run off with Hannibal as a condition to her taking the part; and, also, Anthony Hopkins insistence that if Jodi Foster wouldn't take the part, that he wouldn't play Lector again if Moore wasn't cast.  But seeing the chaffing dish scene is worth forgiveness.  Yes!  I am sick!  Ah those brains!

Moving On with Ridley

And it was as bad as I remembered.  Also after all this time and all the crap that has happened since in the international warfare sphere, it seems so obviously simple-minded.  All the good intentions are appreciated, but it really is a mess of a movie.  No offense to anyone that likes it.  I like a lot of stuff that others don't; but for me, since I am a big fan of Viggo Mortensen, this is just for completion purposes.

By comparison, it's really hard to believe that these two movies were director by the same person.  Of course, I know that Black Hawk Down is based on a true event (or series thereof).  Irregardless of what anyone thinks about this incident, the Blu-Ray of it is awesome.  I'm seeing things in the film that I have never seen or noticed before; it's a little horrifying how clear it is.

That's a Hell of a Badge!

OK.  This is one hell of a movie poster.  It screams 1980's!!!  For some reason this was released on Blu-Ray and we are on a serious Bu-Ray feeding frenzy...so when the idea for focussing on Ridley Scott for Friday Frights came up, well anything on Blu-Ray by him was a must.  It's not a particulary bad film--it's also no where near one of his or Michael Douglas' best either.  Same can be said for Hans Zimmer's SDTK.  But hey, currently watching G.I. Jane, which I have seen once and didn't like at all.  All these years later, giving it a second view.

The Thursday Lead In

The main feature was Body of Lies  (2008), which I had never seen before.  It was a very compitnat movie, which, because of content, I hesitate to call "entertaining."  I admit that (sin of all sins) I have never really been a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, but I really believed his performance in this.  I will admit that I do like a lot Russell Crowe's performances, which probably makes me some sort of a hypocrite.  I am very much an  admirer of David Ignatius, of Washington Post fame (if you can really be famous for working for them anymore) as a journalist, but I have never read any of his novels.  If this is any indication of how good a novelist he is, I'd better get reading!  Ignatius' novel of the same name was only published in 2007, a year before the film's debut.  Talk about hot off the press!

Last Film Entry Before The Awards

Native actors in this are Gary Busey (Cherokee/Choctaw--yeah he's an Indian and part Irish) and Henry Kingi (Cherokee--and European, Japanese & African American), stuntman ex-Husband of the Bionic  Woman herself Lindsey Wagner.  While Busey has a starring role, Kingi (who actually has stunt roles throughout the film) gets killed right away, featuring a really spectacular stunt dive off a building.  Their are Latin actors as well Elpidia Carillo, who is Anna in the first Predator movie, makes a brief appearance, she is from Michoacan Mexico; and is, I'm pretty sure, of Purepecha [Tarascan] ancestry.  Also starring Panama's own Rueben Blades and Maria Conchita Alonso.  The legendary Bahamian actor Calvin Lockhart is the unforgettable King Willie--oh that wig!  Rounding out the cast are Danny Glover and Bill Paxton; and, of course, Kevin Peter Hall, the Predator, who was also the Predator in the first movie.

Although some European influences are regularly understood to be a part of Voodoo, the Native American influences are rarely if ever discussed.  In fact, famed Voodoo Queen Maria Laveau was not only part African and part French she was part Choctaw too, which would account for her powerful command of knowledge regarding Native American herbs and their medicinal (and other...) qualities.  In Haiti the Vodoun Culture Language has come to the recent attention of linguists, who have noted (in documents other than the Ethonologue entry) a Taino or Arawak lexicon in some parts of the island.  Hey, there is always a Native American side to everything little thing in the new world!  Good night, and Good luck!
