Monster Man (2003)

It was only a matter of time before someone made a horror film that promintly featured a monster truck as one of the main intruments of terror.  But seeing as how monster trucks are a bit on the funny side to begin with (well, maybe, more than a "bit"), such a movie could only really work as a horror comedy.  And as far as horror comedy goes, this film provides laughs from the start and keeps most laughing all the way to end!  Not that it's not a horror film--it's a gory as they come!  Who knew guts could be so funny!!??

Drag Me To Hell

Although not really listed as a comedy horror on most horror sites, this movie seriously has the Raimi brand of dark humor all over it!  It's the same humor that comes through in Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness.  You might say that it is "demon humor."  I think if people try to take this for a straight horror film, it gets annoying pretty quickly; but seen as a really silly dark comedy with demons, it's much more enjoyable. I really appreciate the financial sub-text here as well; the reference to the recent housing crisis and foreclosure frenzy are a nice reason for the curse to be invoked in the first place.  And no, I don't think it's a rip-off of Thinner either.  Actually the scariest thing in the film are the boyfriends parents!  :-)

The Frighteners (1996)

Peter Jackson may be best known as the director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but before that he was a well established director of horror comedies.  The Frighteners may not be nearly a gory as Dead Alive (1992) (aka Braindead) or his alien indie Bad Taste (1987), but it is just as hilarious.  It also the film that made some huge technological leaps in film making when it came to special effects, and actually made the Lord of the Rings project possible!  It also firmly established New Zealand as a top notch alternative place to make movies, and, for the first time, Jackson's production company WETA started getting business as go-to guys and gals outside of Jackson's own projects for all sorts of special effects and costume manufacture.  All of that makes this little ghost story a pretty historical little film.

Innocent Blood (1992)

Not only have I been having Internet trouble for the past week (something about my provider laying cable), I also am under the weather with such bad allergies that I can barely see through inflamed watery eyes--so don't think I will be too witty today, despite that I do love a good horror comedy.  Anyway, going for a John Landis double feature here.  I do like his brand of horror comedy best, I think.  He makes funny movies for sure, but he also makes very good, in some cases legendary, horror films!  And he doesn't skimp on the gore!!

Final Lead In: Deep Rising

Yes this counts as a horror comedy movie in my house....and I saw it in thearters....hey there are jokes about breath mints and feeding creatures chewing gum.  Not Stephen Summers finest, but I never took it seriously to begin with.  It's still funny.  Besides, I'm a big Wes Studi fan.
