Miss Weena In All Her Moggy Glory!
It's a new year, and time, I think, for a new feature here. I don't have nearly enough time to write reviews of the odd film here and there (and, besides, how many horror review sites are there anyway), but I love the idea of tossing of some mini-reviews of a list of mostly foreign, low budget or straight to video fare that I recently put together for myself and Weena (who's been featured here before...she even has here on category) to watch in the evenings. The list comes from my tooling around on one of my favorite sites IMCDb.org. The only criterion for these films is that they have to be available to stream. So that means a lot of Amazon Prime, with the odd newer film thrown in on Netflix (we haven't resorted to YouTube....yet). And, yes it will include notes on whether we liked or recommend the film, with special notes on films getting cat reactions from the other doofus cats in the house. I've/we've been threatening to this for some time on Twitter, where Weena goes by the #TheHorrorLovingCat (you can check the hashtag page here.) in tweets.
Why am a doing this? Well, because I have 5 cats--4 of them inside only--and only one of them loves multi-media...and horror films in particular. Weena turned 15 last August 3rd and has had some heatlth problems in the last few years...so a horror film project seemed in order. It is the best therapy, no?? Let's face it, I have no idea how long my horror buddy will be around.
So without further delay, here 's our first entry. And it's rather infamous! [We are trying to keep spoilers to a minimum in these little write-ups]
That's right πΊπ Hong Kong's Cat. III horror classic that is Eight Immortals Restaurant: The Untold Story, which was released in 1993 and earned Anthony Chou-Sang Wong a best lead actor award at the Hong Kong Film Awards...and damn...he deserved it! I had not actually seen this before (really when I think about that, it seems almost remiss of me for not having watched before now). If you are unfamiliar with it, it's a legendary so-called "black comedy" that is as brutal as any horror film gets, and it's loosely based on true events surrounding the brutal murder of an entire family in the 1980's in the Hong Kong harbor area. The film involves not only cannibalism in the form of "Pork Buns" (long pork, that is), but also features, basically, the butchering of kids in the furtherance of killing them. I was winching big time!!...and looking away (I'm daring myself to watch it again and to stare it down). Then, I look over at Miss Weena and not only is she seriously digging it (she loves screaming), but she's audibly purring, listening intently, and giving her famous "two paws of approval"! I mean, she knows her sicko-horror when she hears it...even when it's in Cantonese! And about the language--the print that I watched was on Prime and it did not include sub-t's; I have since found that there is a print on YouTube that not only has English sub-titles, but the film also looks better. For now, that's it for viewing options (the ones that are legal that is)--the DVD release here in US is crazy expensive, and that's used! Yeah, so two paws from Miss Weena--we are recommending this one. But take note: you have been warned about the disturbing deaths & assaults, plus it's high gore content!! I do recommend viewing the trailer first, just to know what you a letting yourself in for. (Oh, and don't get this mixed up with it's 2003 remake, called in English...and I swear, you can't make this up, Bloody Buns!--Which I hear tell isn't nearly as well made.)
