Neo Noir movies since the late 60s seem to fall into two basic categories: the crime flick set in a dystopian future (like Watchmen, or Bladerunner), or a crime flick shot in color with all the trappings (and film technology) of the present, but employing (some of) the conventions of classic noir.
Gone Girl is a Neo Noir set in a dystopian present. The detective narrator of classic crime films, has been coopted by an insane diarist intent on framing her doofus husband for murder. A very original take on Neo Noir (as are Fincher's other movies, films like Fight Club, Se7en, GwtDT, The Game, and even Zodiac!)
