Patricia Velasquez, model turned actress, was introduced to the whole world in the first of Steven Sommers' mummy remakes in The Mummy in 1998 in a "smallish" part as the ancient Anck su Namun, the traitorous wife of the Pharaoh Seti. In this sequel, she has a much bigger role, both reprising Anck su Namun and as the reincarnated Meela. Velasquez was born in Venezuela and is from the Wayuu people (sometimes called simply "Caribs" by people in the academics for some reason). She founded The Wayuu Taya Foundation in 2002 to benefit the people that her mother was born to.
