Alive (1993)

I've not seen this before.  I have seen the 1976 movie and it was pretty good; I've seen where people seem to like the film just as much.  One thing is for sure, there is no shortage or horror or horror caused by snow.

Based on true events from 1972, the story is pretty famous.  A plane chartered by a Uruguayan rugby team crashes in the Andes mountains, with the surviving members forced to make do in the freezing cold, having only a part of the front of the plane to take shelter in.  After the initial shock of spending their first night in these conditions, another plight shows up:  altitude sickness.  After finding ways of trying to cope with that, yet another more dire problem shows up:  starvation.  This, of course, led to survival cannibalism.  All of this on top of a flight mechinic that is bat shit insane!!  I mean, the giggling "Renfield" kind of crazy!!

This all leads to a rough and tough decision to form a small group and try to hike out of the crash site to seek help and rescue.  This becomes especially important after the survivors spot a plane that they think sees them, and they binge on what little food they have left and then no help or supplies show up.

Starring Ethan Hawke, Vincent Spano, Josh Hamilton, Bruce Ramsey and John Newton, it was released in January of 1993, it was a winter movie to end all winter movies!  The tagline pretty much says it all:  They were oridinary men driven to the very limits of human endurance.

An actual aerial photo of the real crash site

Hey at least this is a little more cheery!
