This is based on a true story, though the story in the screenplay is a pure fabrication. There is a famous old English ballad of the events surrounding the murder or Maria Marten (first name pronounced "mah-ry-a") that some will know from Tom Waits, but The Albion Band with Shirley Collins did it before him! It is a truly haunting rendition of the ballad--suitable for Halloween for sure.
