Yeah I know it's not the original. I'm a HUGE John Carpenter fan from way back, but for the purposes of celebrating New Year this is an OK film. It's no where near a good as it's name sake, and it has this slick Hollywood varnish, but it also has a few genuinely dark moments and I personally like the cop on cop take on the whole affair. It's cynical in a way that appeals a bit to me. If they hadn't called it a remake of Carpenter's film, I kinda wonder what sort of reception it would have gotten (obviously, similarities in the script would have been noticed). As a New Year's flick full of guns, it works for me. Besides, I love Larry Fishburne!!
