No doubt Ari Aster's work, both Midsommar and this, need no introduction. But, that's is not stopping me from going ahead and adding this to the list of 31 horror recommendations this October. To be sure, Aster's work is not to everyone's taste, but I think that Hereditary is far more "accessible" than is his brightly lit pagan horror Midsommar. They both fall in some fashion or flavor into the "pagan horror" sub-genre, but Hereditary falls more recognizably into the category of "witch movies." It is still a skilled study in psychological horror; a deep sense of dread and family angst is immediate, and the familial mystery only deepens as the film progresses--which makes the terror build slowly. You are not going to find any jump scares; and there are most definitely no masked invincible murderers. Instead you have a bloody good supernatural horror thriller with domestication as it's chief vehicle. Unsettling and perfect for Spooktober!
