31 Days Of Horror Recommendations: Tesis

Year: 1996

Country: Spain

Sub-Genre: Giallo (Spanish Giallo/"Giallo-esque")

Runtime: 125 min (uncut original version)

Director: Alejandro AmenĂ¡bar

Film fans, regardless of whether they are horror hounds or not, probably best know AmenĂ¡bar's direction from his 2001 haunted house drama The Others (also, of course, his 2004 The Sea Inside with Javier Bardem, an Oscar winner). But, Tesis (Thesis) is his feature directorial debut. This is firmly a giallo-esque horror, but there are parts of the story that are very reminiscent of Argento's classic witch masterpiece Suspiria from 1977. The mystery element is strong and engaging, despite the brutality. Solidly in the same vein as Peeping Tom (1960) and What The Pepper Saw (1972), it is also relatively low on gore; though not low on very scary suspense. The direction is excellent; truly impressive for a first film!!! It is a solid horror thriller and, again, highly recommended.
