31 Days Of Horror Recommendations: Prey (2022)

Subgenre: Aliens/Native Horror

Runtime: 99 minutes

I wanted pick something brand spanking new to recommend; but I am also super stoked that this also falls into the category of Native American horror. I also love that the protagonist is a young female warrior, who brings the grrrl power big time, it's definitely in my "oh yeah!" zone.  On top of that, this is a Predator movie, so there is a lot to recommend. A prequel (obviously) set in the 18th century on the plains and centers around a young Comanche woman who is honing her skills as a tracker, despite her brother and friends bringing the typical male nay-saying. Amber Midthunder (Assiniboine/Lakota) plays Naru, the young tracker, who, with her dog, gets pulled into the path of a hunting predator (played by YouTube foodie Dane DiLeigro). In the process, she and her brother have a run in with some French fur trappers. In large part, the film serves as a back story to the gun that is handed to Danny Glover's character Harrigan at the end of Predator 2. In a way, that gun kind of becomes a character in the film. It's just a bloody good costume horror with plenty of action. Quite entertaining and it streams on Hulu.  Additionally, it is just awesome that all of the indigenous people in the script are played by indigenous actors, but also a number of native people made the film possible, including two indigenous (and female!) producers. Good stuff!!
